Instead of giving their patients rational treatment, i.e., investigating fully the causes leading to sleeplessness and removing them, medical men often resort to the easier course of giving powerful chemical substances with a soporific action. Again, certain manufacturers of medicinal drugs employ on. their staff medical men and others who carry on an extensive propaganda by advertisements in the medical as well as in the lay press. By broadcasting literature extolling the wonderful sleep-producing and non-toxic effects of these drugs, they influence both the medical profession and the public.
